Episode 96: Babysitting
Alice:Well it’s almost bedtime. Time for you to go upstairs.
Ellie:I don’t want to go to bed. I want to stay down here with you.
Alice:Well you know I’d love to have your company.
Ellie:Then let me stay down and watch TV.
Alice:Ellie, I don’t think that’s such a good idea. You have to get up for school in the morning.
Ellie:School? I hate school!
Alice:I’m sure you don’t.
Ellie:I do. I hate school and I hate bed. You can’t make me go upstairs.
Alice:Oh I think I can.
Ellie:No you can’t. You’re not my mummy. You can’t make me do anything. I hate you!

Boss:Would you like to hear it? You’ll like it, I promise!
Tim:I’m listening…
Boss:Look Tim, my little plan could get us both out of quite a tight spot. It’s quite simple really, you just say that you noticed the watch boxes had been tampered with when you accepted the delivery from the suppliers. That’ll take the heat off us and move the investigation onto them.
Tim:Yeah, but the police won’t just take my word for it, will they?
Boss:That’s true Tim, they probably won’t, but I’m going to arrange for them to find some more evidence to link the fake watches firmly to the supplier and not us. I won’t go into details, but it’ll work, trust me.
Tim:So somebody else will end up being charged with a crime they didn’t commit.
Boss:Well if it isn’t somebody else Tim, it’ll probably be you.
Tim:Can I just say something here?
Boss:Yes Tim, what is it?

Social Justice

What is the meaning of social justice in education?

For me, there are two angles to answer this question, the first one is the equality in the access to education of all the students (quality, curriculum, school infrastructure, and type of extracurricular activities), so all can discover their talents and create a career that they are passionate about.

The other angle is to create students that they are opinative, woke about injustices, with the heart to help others, a strong voice to communicate their ideas. The way to do that is to show through your specialty the bad things about this society and let them create their own small contribution.

How I would promote social justice in my classroom?…

I will show my students different visions about life, my students to be connected to society they need to be in touch with a lot of people from different places ( talks of different people will be part of my classes, excursions to museums/tourist places or choices about methodology) all based in the idea that we are humans, that with small contributions you can start a revolution of kindness.

So all of them will have their own vision about life if they have ideas or ways to make this system fairer for everybody ( they will be welcome in my class), if they want to protest about anything important (Black Lives Matter, Me too, LBTQ+ rights or anything that are concern about it), if they want to debate I will allow it.

If they need help to make some noise about something, I will raise my voice, music, and soul to talk about bullying prevention, divergent minds ( capacities or forms), or anything that they want to talk about. I will show that English is the tool, people are the ones that give English personality ( it could be a way to a revolution of respect and equality).
